Life Coaching and Power Strategies for Success

Posted on Jul 20th, 2008 by Greg : Zen Coach Greg
The Power of Strategy

What are strategies, and how to use them to become more successful.

I am a believer that the right strategy ensures a successful outcome, and that the wrong -- or outdated -- strategy wastes valuable resources and needlessly delays the results. The trick is to select the perfect strategy -- or have the ability to create it from scratch. In my view, the right strategies are what makes a person or company a success or failure today.

In the old days, hard work, commitment, effort, dedication and "following the rules" were how you succeeded. It worked, but it was very, very costly in all areas: physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

But as we approach the next millennium, it's clear that smart people are no longer willing to suffer for success -- not even a little bit. The answer? Strategies. Creative strategies. Customized strategies. Clever strategies. Strategies are the keys to success, no matter what the goal.

But you have to know these strategies. A lot of them. And some that you've never heard of or never considered. And you have to learn how to craft, adapt and synthesize them to fit your situation or that of your company or clients.

Strategizing is a skill, and it's a skill that you can benefit from forever in your career, business and in your personal life.

1. A strategy is *HOW* you get something accomplished, whether it's you doing the work, someone else doing the work, or the strategy itself that does the work.

People sometimes get strategies, plans, goals, outcomes, purpose, vision and action steps confused. Briefly, here's the difference:

A PLAN: A plan is what you develop in order to identify, organize and schedule your time, resources and energy. A plan consists of a list of resources needed, actions steps to take, a timeline of events and progress milestones.

PURPOSE: Your purpose is why you are doing what you are doing, why you've set a goal, why you're going for an outcome.

VISION: Vision describes a possibility. A vision is what you see that perhaps others can't see as well. It's about an improvement, a betterment, sheer possibility, yet it's not pie-in-the-sky.

OUTCOMES: An outcome is what occurs after you reach your objective or goal. The outcome includes the results, but also the benefits of those results, both tangible and intangible.

STRATEGY: A strategy is HOW something gets done, not just what you do. A strategy is your approach. It's your positioning. It's your smart way of reaching the goal with the least amount of wasted effort or cost. With a strategy, you aren't always working directly on the goal itself, but rather on improving or positioning the environments, relationships, resources, flows, systems or even yourself. So strategies are very different from a plan. In fact, when you devise the right strategy, the plan becomes obvious. But without the strategy, the plan is merely a set of linear action steps (read: lots of work and often stoopid).

2. The first reason to develop a strategy is to save yourself time, money, effort.

In other words, by using a strategy, you are using your intelligence and creativity to be clever, instead of just focusing on action steps. Anyone can recommend action steps, but it's the effective coach, professional or executive who always designs a strategy BEFORE embarking on the action steps.

3. The second reason to develop a strategy is to expand the outcomes.

The right strategy ALWAYS expands the goals and the outcomes. ALWAYS. Think of Amazon.com. Their original goal was to be the largest seller of books and their strategy to achieve that goal was to use the Internet as their storefront. But the strategy of using the Internet has proven so brilliant, it has expanded their goals, so now Amazon.com offers music, videos, gifts, software and who knows what else! Their strategy became 'even more important' than their original goal (more on this idea below).

4. Every goal, then, deserves a clever strategy.

Goal-setting, without an accompanying strategy, is fairly impotent and usually expensive. Sure you can accomplish goals without having a strategy, but why not use the power of strategy to help you reach the goal more easily? Why not use your mind, wisdom and creativity to make life occur more easily for you? Why slog through life?

5. There are many viable strategies available for virtually every situation.

Here's a brief list of the types of things that people and companies want to focus on:
  • Personal Development
  • Professional Development
  • Personal Financial Success
  • Lifestyle Improvement
  • Business Marketing
  • Business Performance
  • Problem-Solving
  • Customer Relationship Improvement

Did you know there are at least a dozen distinct strategies to help a person reach goals in EACH of these areas?

Let's take the Personal Development area for a moment. To help a client (or yourself) develop personally, you can use any number of strategies. You can use the Integrity Strategy, the Personal Foundation Strategy, the Attraction Strategy, the Personal Evolution Strategy, the Spiritual Strategy, the Healing Strategy, the Extreme Self Care Strategy, the Integration Strategy, the Evolution Strategy, the Beliefs Strategy, the Bodywork Strategy, the Acceptance/Detachment Strategy, the SuperReserve Strategy, the Overrespond Strategy, the Awareness Strategy, and the Self-Esteem Strategy.

Each of these strategies helps a person to develop themselves. Wouldn't it be nice to know something about each one of them? Wouldn't it be helpful to know enough to be able to play chef and craft the perfect combination of ingredients from all of them and whip up a customized strategy for a client, within minutes?

THAT's the power of strategy, but to become a masterful strategist, you need to know the strategies themselves and how to build custom ones to fit exact needs.

6. Strategies are key to business success as well.

There is not a single business today that isn't using a strategy of some kind to grow or manage that business. But are they using the BEST strategy? Are they using the most CURRENT strategy? Are they using a CUSTOMIZED strategy?

Let's take one of the areas of focus listed above -- Business Performance -- and list a dozen strategies that could be used to help a company improve their performance. You could use the Creating a Gap Strategy, the Incentives Strategy, the Vision Strategy, the Coopetition Strategy, the Coaching Strategy, the Leverage Strategy, the Customers-As-R&D-Team Strategy, the Internet Marketing Strategy, the Automation Strategy, the Eliminate Delay Strategy, the Virtual Management Strategy, Intrapreneur Strategy, the Reinvention Strategy, and/or the Creativity-Skills Strategy. Oops, that 14 strategies. See how easy this is!

Some of these you are already familiar with, some of these are probably new for you. But wouldn't it be helpful to be familar with ALL of them? Would that make you wise? Would that make you highly effective with your clients, with your company and/or in your own personal life?

7. You start the process of creating a strategy by asking yourself some questions.

"What's the smartest, cleverest, most creative and easiest way to make X happen, without having to do it like everyone else is trying to do it? What's a better way? What's an unconventional way? What's MY way?"

One of the most fascinating aspects of strategy is that the process of developing strategies is a highly creative one. True, you can use off-the-shelf strategies. But it's also important to be able to craft and customize strategies. You do this by first learning the basic strategies for personal and business success (there are 160 of them, and counting). And THEN when you ask yourself the questions above, you'll have enough raw material to invent something new that fits perfectly for your situation or a client's.

8. Strategies evolve you, in addition to helping you achieve your goals faster.

In any personal or business situation, there are 3 elements: the person, the goal and the strategy. I call these the Who, the What and the How. In an earlier point, I mentioned that the strategy affects and expands the goal, using Amazon.com as the example. But did you know that a strategy can also expand who YOU are? Think about it. I bet Jeff Bezos (CEO of Amazon.com) is a bigger/more expanded person since he began implementing this strategy to reach his initial goal. In some ways, the original goal expanded Jeff, meaning that he began to think bigger and got stretched as he launched Amazon.com. But as he developed his strategy of using the Internet, I say that this strategy expanded and evolved him as well.

In other words, what I am saying is that our goals and our strategies have as much to do with our personal evolution as to do with our direct efforts in that area. Or to put it another way, if you REALLY want to evolve yourself, find a goal, create a clever strategy and watch the evolution occur. Strategies are a catalyst for personal evolution. It sure beats willpower.

9. Strategies let you achieve in the middle of chaos.

There's a lot that's been said about 'change' and 'change management' during the past 10 years. And with the development of the Internet, the rate of this change is changing. In fact, the rate of time is also changing, given an Internet Year is about 3 months, not 12 months. And with the millennium approaching, we are all re-evaluating what it is that we really want and how we're going to achieve it. Like fast.

I think it's fair to say that we're moving from a rational world (predictable, logical) to an irrational world (unpredictable, illogical). If this progression is true, then it means that chaos had better become our friend -- and fast -- instead of us trying to control or limit the chaos (how 80s!). But how do we, as humans, 'hold' chaos, given it brings up fear and stimulates us in ways we cannot predict?

The answer that I've found for myself is to become an expert on strategies. I find that when I focus on strategies, I can handle -- and actually enjoy -- chaos. I DON'T NEED TO KNOW THE OUTCOME. After all, as chaos increases, outcomes become less and less predictible. More about this in my final point, #10.

10. It is as important to be an expert in strategies as it is to be dedicated to results.

Earlier in this Top Ten list, you may remember that I said that the right strategy will expand the goal in very cool ways? I used Amazon.com as my example. Now, I have nothing against goal setting and goal achievement -- that makes the world go 'round. But I feel that it's as important to learn the skills of strategy design as it is to learn how to deliver results. Why? Because if you only deliver results, it means that you're using older strategies, not inventing newer ones. It means that you're good at running a Barnes and Noble Store, but ignorant that the majority of books will soon be purchased online. (Nothing against Barnes and Noble -- they are great and they have barnesandnoble.com)

Put it another way. If I was your coach, I could help you reach your goals, using coaching and communication skills, and you could benefit from my experience of having helped a hundred other people reach that same type of goal. But I'd just be giving you 'fish' instead of teaching you how to fish. So part of what I do with my clients is that I share strategies with them, not just action steps. And I teach my clients how to strategize, so that they can devise their own strategies, far after they've stopped coaching with me.

Teaching a client how to strategize is the ultimate in empowerment. You are giving them the tools to empower themselves. And that's an 'annuity of value' that the client will benefit from for a lifetime.

Ion Ways - Water Quality and Ionizers

Posted on Mar 29th, 2008 by Greg : Zen Coach Greg
Girldrinking

Most people think water is just plain old H2O and is the same regardless of where it comes from – whether from a bottle, tap or well. The truth is water quality varies widely throughout the US. The variation depends on many factors. There are two basic causes of variation - natural environmental factors and contaminants caused by man.

Contaminants are usually man-made but not in all case as there are also naturally occurring contaminants.  A main influence on the type and concentration of contaminants is how close the water is to population centers, industry, livestock and/or agricultural operations etc.

Natural causes of changes in water quality are mainly due to the source of the water supply. Some examples of common water sources are aquifers, rivers, reservoirs, run-off, wells,
springs etc. These variations in source contribute to the difference the mineral content in water. These variables cause water to have very different properties, such as taste and smell or to “behave” or perform differently around the house, especially in an ionizing unit.

In general terms we have “hard” or “soft” waters. Hard water has a high concentration of
minerals.  Soft water is low in mineral content.

The Scaling Effect of Hard and Soft Water

If you live in a hard water area you know it is more difficult to form lather with soap while bathing or performing ordinary household washing chores. Perhaps you have on occasion noticed mineral deposits on your cooking dishes, or rings of insoluble soap scum in your bathtub. These are not necessarily signs of poor housekeeping, but are rather signs of
hard water from the water supply. Hard water is water that contains calcium, iron or magnesium mineral ions. These minerals do not pose any health threat, unless in very high amounts, but they can engage in reactions that leave insoluble mineral deposits.

Hard water mineral deposits or scaling, is the precipitation of minerals which form lime scale. Scale can clog pipes and can decrease the life of toilet flushing units. It can coat the inside of tea and coffee pots, and clog and ruin water heaters – and of course do the same thing to
your ionizer.

Very soft water (which is acidic) can corrode the metal pipes in which it is carried and as a result the water may contain elevated levels of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc.

Hard and Soft Water and Ionizer Performance

An ionizer requires mineral content to operate. It is the minerals which carry the electrical charge. Water that has no minerals, such as reverse osmosis or distilled water has no pathway for the electrolysis or “ionization” to occur. It is important to note that all water found
in nature has dissolved mineral content, so these types of “pure” water are a man-made phenomenon. Our bodies are made to drink water with minerals not pure, mineral free bottled water. Calcium, potassium and magnesium minerals in natural water are called the “essential, alkalizing minerals” as they are essential to our health.

The more mineral content your water has the more easily your ionizer will alter the water
– the better performance you will experience. The less mineral content, the harder it is for
your ionizer to create alteration in your water – or, the weaker performance you will experience. In simple terms an ionizer will perform better with hard water and will have a
harder time with softer water.

It is not recommended to use an ionizer without pretreatment in areas with water that has
the following measurements: hardness over 316ppm (18.5 grains); and/or TDS over 400ppm; and/or Calcium above 50ppm.

Hard water in the US

According to the United States Geological Survey, 85% of US homes have hard water. The softest waters occur in parts of the New England, South Atlantic-Gulf, Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii regions. Moderately hard waters are common in many of the rivers of the Tennessee, Great Lakes, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska regions. Hard and very hard waters are found in some of the streams in most of the regions throughout the country. Hardest waters (greater than 1,000 mg/L) are in streams in Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Arizona, parts of Florida and southern California.

Dehydration's Hidden Symptoms

Posted on Mar 26th, 2008 by Greg : Zen Coach Greg
by Brian D. Foltz and Joe Ferrara, PhD

Chronic dehydration remains hidden as a cause of health problems because its symptoms are usually blamed on something else. For example, dehydration triggers the release of histamine. Histamine's function here is to regulate the thirst mechanism and conserve and ration available water in the body according to a priority of function. Elevated histamine can lead to allergies.

Allergies are a symptom of chronic dehydration. When you are dehydrated and histamine levels are elevated, your body releases a stress hormone called cortisol. This suppresses the production of white blood cells and you become more vulnerable to all kinds of allergens.

The dust, mold or pollen in the air made you sneeze, but it was chronic dehydration that raised your histamine levels and suppressed your immune system in the first place. Taking anti?histamines can help you feel better, but this only covers up the symptoms. Underneath, the problem of dehydration continues to take its toll.

The first signs of dehydration

Less energy is usually the first sign of dehydration because the cells of the body are the first to lose water. Water is a primary driving force of energy production inside the cells, so even the slightest water loss causes a big drop in energy. For every one percent drop of water inside your cells, energy production is cut by 10 percent.

Digestive problems are another early symptom. All the substances that break down food in the digestive tract are water-based. Acid reflux is thought to be causes by the production of too much stomach acid. However, too little stomach acid due to chronic dehydration is often the real cause. When the stomach doesn't have enough acid for digestion, food stays in your stomach too long and gets pushed back up, along with some acid.

As discussed in "Water: For Health For Healing For Life," a book by dehydration pioneer and researcher, Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, heartburn and indigestion after eating are dehydration symptoms that eventually lead to peptic ulcers. This pain is your body's way of telling you that it is extremely thirsty. Sometimes the pain is not severe, but simply felt as a discomfort in the upper abdomen. Sometimes the pain is intense and is around the appendix and might seem like appendicitis and other times it might be felt on the left side, over the large intestine.

Constipation is also a symptom of dehydration. The intestinal tract uses a lot of water to liquefy and break down your food so the nutritional elements can be extracted. The body reabsorbs much of that water, depending on its need. The more the body is dehydrated, the more it slows down the passage of waste through the lower intestine so it can extract more water. This causes constipation, which can become chronic and lead to hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, polyp formation and colon cancer.

As chronic dehydration persists and deepens, survivals mode of the body are activated to manage and preserve water for the most vital functions. Batmanghelidj notes: "There are five distinct conditions that denote states of dehydration and operative rationing processes... Asthma, Allergies, Hypertension, Constipation and Type II diabetes." These conditions, each in their own way, help the body conserve water and/or protect vital areas of the body from the ravaging effects of dehydration.

Your body's many signals of thirst

Dry mouth is not the only sign of dehydration. It is not even a reliable thirst signal because your need for saliva to digest food will override the dry mouth thirst signal. As we become more dehydrated and grow older, the dry mouth signal is gradually blunted and can disappear entirely. You must learn to recognize the other indicators of thirst and dehydration.

The body has many ways to tell you that it is thirsty. Hunger feelings are often a thirst signal, since food is a natural source of water for the body and their control centers are next to each other in the brain. Your very first feeling of hunger should be satisfied with one or two glasses of water. You will notice an hour or two later your body's actual request for food energy will occur. Cravings for sugar and carbohydrates can also signal dehydration. The brain has a very high demand for water, which it only can get from blood flow. Carbohydrates raise blood sugar which increases blood flow to the brain.

Dehydration is a frequent cause of mental difficulties, including depression. The brain is the top priority for water in the body and extremely sensitive to any water shortage. It is only two percent of the body's weight, yet requires 15 percent of the blood flow. However, it has no direct way to tell the body it needs water. So it will manifest feelings of anxiety, irritableness, anger, short attention span, impatience and even depression. If there are no plausible reasons for such feelings, it may be your brain trying to tell you it is thirsty.

Early pregnancy morning sickness is a signal of dehydration of the mother and fetus. It is caused by the water and the regulatory action of histamine, explains Batmanghelidj. Pregnancy creates a very high demand for water. As the fetus grows into a full-term baby, over 1 trillion cell divisions take place. Each new cell must be filled with water. Pregnant women need should drink water and eliminate all sources of dehydration, especially the consumption of caffeine and alcohol.

What color is your urine?

Urine color accurately indicates short-term hydration levels. Dehydration causes your kidneys to recycle urine so it becomes more concentrated and darker in color. The darker your urine, the more dehydrated you are (not counting urine colored by certain vitamins, foods, medications, etc). Extreme dehydration is orange in color. The darker your urine, the more acid is in your body and the more damage is occurring at a cellular level. If you are well hydrated, your urine will be clear or a very pale yellow.

Dehydration creates an imbalance in your inner chemistry that sparks a cascade of negative effects, contributing to virtually any health problem or disease process. It translates directly into stress in your body through the increased production of histamine and the stress hormone cortisol. This increases blood acidity, which decreases oxygen uptake by the red blood cells and suppresses a myriad of enzymatic reactions vital to cellular function. More serious damage begins to occur when the proteins and enzymes of the body gradually become less efficient.

The primary cause of chronic dehydration has also remained hidden, until recently. The new science of energy medicine has shed light on the severe lack of vital energy in today's drinking water. This is why, despite drinking lots of water, many people still remain dehydrated. Fortunately, a new nature?based technology has been developed to restore this vital energy water needs to optimize cellular hydration.

Better hydration must become a top priority in patient care. By helping your patients understand and reverse chronic dehydration, they will enjoy better energy levels, enhanced results from chiropractic treatments and nutritional protocols, easier weight loss, reduced pain, better detoxification, increased longevity and an improved quality of life.

6 Tips to Living Longer

Posted on Mar 26th, 2008 by Greg : Zen Coach Greg
Scientists armed with a mounting body of evidence and research from across the world are waging war on what they claim is the biggest killer in the West--an overly acidic body.

The theory goes that whenever the body burns fuel it creates acidic toxins as a by-product. Many scientists now believe that high build-ups of these acid wastes can be a primary cause of chronic disease, overweight and aging. Live longer by following these six simple tips to re-balance your body's acid-alkaline levels ("pH"):

Live Longer Checklist

--Drink ionized alkaline water

--Eat an acid-neutralizing diet

--Exercise --Reduce stress

--Stop smoking

--Drink during air travel

HEALTH BENEFITS OF ALKALINE DRINKING WATER AND DIET

Various studies reveal that a balanced body pH has been shown to:

--Reduce heart disease in a town in Finland by 22%

--Reduce insulin dependence in North American type 1 diabetes patients by 83%

--Reduce arthritis pain, linked to chronic build-up of uric acid

--Reduce risk of cancer (cancer cells flourish in an acidic environment)

--Slow the aging process. Aging starts when the body stops getting rid of internally generated wastes and toxins.

Studies and research suggest that even mild acid-waste build-up can cause:

--Cardiovascular damage, including the constriction of blood vessels and the reduction of oxygen -- so important for healthy cells

--Weight gain, obesity and diabetes

--Bladder and kidney conditions, including kidney stones

--Immune deficiency -

-Accleration of free radical damage, possibly contributing to cancerous mutations

--Hormone concerns

--Premature aging

--Osteoporosis: weak, brittle bones, hip fractures and bone spurs

--Joint pain, aching muscles and lactic acid build-up

--Low energy and chronic fatigue

--Slow digestion and elimination

--Yeast / fungal overgrowth

TIP 1 - DRINK ALKALINE WATER

Each cell in your body can only function as well as the fluid it is surrounded by -- like a fish in a bowl. So the cleaner and less acidic the liquids in your body are, the healthier you're likely to be. Considering that the body eliminates acidic waste through body liquids in four different ways -- respiration, urination, perspiration or defecation, the key to good health means:

--Drink enough of the right type of water to hydrate the body properly

--Drink ionized alkaline water -- studies show it's twice as effective in flushing out acid toxins as bottled or filtered water

--As you get older, total water to body ratio decreases, making elimination harder. So you need to drink more.

--Same thing goes for when it's hot. Drink more.

TIP 2 -- DIET

Changing your diet can significantly reduce the level of acidity in your body. But if you can't cut out acid-producing foods, it's even more important to drink alkaline water.

Eat more of these foods that neutralize acidity in the body:

--Leafy greens and most veggies

--Most fruits including citrus

--Polyunsaturated fats found in seed oils (flax and hemp), fatty fish (seabass, tuna, mackeral, trout, salmon), coconut milk and avocado

--Okay proteins include chicken breast, tofu, and many seeds

Eat fewer acid-producing foods like:

--Animal protein (beef, chicken, pork and eggs)

--Dairy products

--Vinegar

--Soy sauce

--Mushrooms

--Corn

--Sugar

--Alcohol

--Coffee

--Peanuts

--Pasta

TIP 3 -- EXERCISE

Being overweight has nothing to do with fats or calories, according to some authors like Dr. Robert Young, author of the pH Miracle for Weight Loss. He believes putting on weight can be traced to a build-up of acid waste -- if it isn't eliminated, it parks on your hips, buttocks and elsewhere, so you get fat. Try the following instead:

--Exercise makes you sweat and breathe harder -- both processes eliminate toxins.

--Saunas also make you sweat. Take one often.

--Don't over-exercise. This causes a build-up of lactic acid that the body can't eliminate, so it's deposited as fatty tissue.

TIP 4 -- DON'T STRESS

--Relax. Anger and hostility have been shown to increase stomach acidity, which can lead to peptic and stress ulcers, or ulcerative colitis.

TIP 5 -- STOP SMOKING

--Smoking also increase stomach acidity

--If you do smoke, the more acidic your body, the stronger your nicotine craving will be.

What is Enlightenment?

Posted on Dec 7th, 2007 by Greg : Zen Coach Greg

Enlightenment refers to a conscious, direct experience of the Truth (truth in the absolute sense, i.e. that which actually exists apart from how we sense, perceive, think, feel, describe, or learn about it). The objective of the Enlightenment Intensive is to directly experience the Truth of self, life, and another. When one of these fundamental Truths are experienced directly, it is referred to as an enlightenment experience. It always occurs in a timeless instant, always in the present moment, beyond any doubt, and always changes one's state of being into a more enlightened or awakened state of consciousness.

Have you heard of Big Mind, Big Heart?

Posted on Nov 14th, 2007 by Greg : Zen Coach Greg
I was asked by one of my coaching clients if I ever heard of the Big Mind, Big Heart Process developed by Zen Master Genpo Roshi. And, in fact I had seen a couple of advertisements and think someone had emailed me a flyer about it but that was really it. I didn’t really know anything more about it, or so I thought. My client had bought the Big Mind, Big Heart DVD. He asked if I would take a look at it and share my thoughts. By the way he had already taken one of my Enlightenment Intensives and had a direct experience of Self. So, I checked it out the DVD and come to find out that Genpo Roshi and I studied the same teachings based on the work of Hal and Sidra Stone many years prior. In 1999 I had the pleasure of being mentored by Hal's daughter Judith Stone who is masterful in the voice dialogue process. So, as it happens I am familiar with the work of voice dialogue which the Big Mind, Big Heart process is based on. Genpo Roshi has integrated the voice dialogue work nicely with a series of inquiries into the energies or states of mind that are often the barriers to truth and direct experience. After watching the video I decided to introduce the process to a group of about 10 people and was able to get to the non-seeking mind in about an hour and half and abide in it for a while. At the end of the evening several of the people asked for more and said they would be very interested in a one-day workshop. I think the Big Mind, Big Heart is a great process to have people get a taste of new possibilities in the evolution of consciousness that is fun and effortless and I will continue to share it with others. I would like thank Genpo Roshi for his insight and his courage in bringing together the best of eastern and western teachings. If you live near San Diego and would like to be invited to participate in classes and workshops simply send me your email and I will make sure you are notified. In love and service, Greg Clowminzer Zen Coach
